| One night
after leaving Rota Spain, as the trip was winding down, EM2 Train (John) and EM3
Train (Glenn) were up watching the fresh movies we got from the tender in Rota.
As most of you will remember each night just before the midnight watch would
start, the galley would serve some sort of meal, something light for the portion
of the crew that had the midnight watch. While John and I were in Rota we
bought some Maxwell house instant coffee. As Mid Rats approached and the
movie we were watching was ending we decided to stop up and have some coffee.
There was none to be found. Ah, instant coffee now looks really good.
So, John and I put some instant coffee into a white Styrofoam cup and covered it
with sugar. No intentions of fooling anyone, but... John went up first and
put hot water into the cup. Having everything in there already, just made
the hot instantly brewed coffee. The smell of fresh coffee filled the
air. A boatswain mate was sitting at a table after having looked
for coffee and found none (there wasn't any coffee made). He asked my
brother, "Where'd ya get that?" John replied ,"Over
there." Gesturing towards the coffee urns. Boats got up and
headed over to the urns where he found one coffee spigot dry the middle was hot
water and the right side was dry. Disappointed he sat back down surmising
somehow John had gotten the last cup. As I passed him in the mess
decks, he said no more coffee tonight, cook must be sick. I just kept
going, since I had the stuff to make coffee already in the cup. As I
walked away from the coffee machine with a full cup of coffee and passed the
boats he exclaimed, "Where'd ya get that coffee?" I said,
"Over there," pointing at the coffee urns. We could hardly
contain ourselves as he again got up and we watched as he tried all three again
only to find hot water. The look on the boats face was priceless. After roiling
with laughter at his expense we got him a fresh hot cup of instant
laughter. |
